This trail is being developed on nearly 40 miles of the former Missouri-Pacific Railroad linking Topeka’s Shunga Trail, southward to the Flint Hills Nature Trail, just east of Pomona Lake in Osage County. This historic rail corridor is now being developed as a trail and wildlife area and will offer activities such as hiking, biking, running, and horseback riding, through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Midwest.

The trail will follow picturesque Camp Creek, and pass through wooded hills, wetlands and native tallgrass prairie blooming with wildflowers. When complete, the trail will be the only recreational trail in America to link the Oregon National Historic Trail with the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. The recently opened one-mile portion of the trail at Overbrook extends southeast from the trailhead, which is located at about 1st and Maple.

The City of Overbrook was built on the county’s most famous trail—the old Santa Fe Trail. Ruts of the trail can still be seen at several locations in the area. Located just off Highway 56 on the east edge of town, the paved 0.9 mile winding Jones Park Trail traverses around the city lake. Canadian geese and other water birds can sometimes be seen on the lake. Visitors can also view a variety of grasses, trees and other plants on the enjoyable walk around the lake. Restrooms and picnic areas are available at the park, and fishing is allowed with a license.
